Andrei I. Holodny has been named Chief of the Neuroradiology Service in the Department of Radiology. Dr. Holodny is a neuroradiologist whose primary interest is preoperative planning for patients with brain tumors. He uses functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and diffusion MRI to identify important areas in the brain (such as those that control language or motor function) that often lie adjacent to tumors. The ability to identify these areas before and during surgery allows a neurosurgeon or radiation therapist to operate on and treat only the tumor and avoid the surrounding brain tissue. In his research, Dr. Holodny is studying how an fMRI test is affected by the presence of a brain tumor with a view to improving the accuracy of the test. He is also seeking to understand how the brain reorganizes itself in response to a growing tumor. After receiving his MD degree in 1989 from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Dr. Holodny completed an internship in pathology at The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center and a residency in radiology and a fellowship in neuroradiology at NYU Medical Center. He has served as Director of Memorial Sloan-Kettering's Functional MRI Laboratory since joining the Center in 2001.
