In recent years, Memorial Sloan Kettering has expanded treatment services in order to serve more patients in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the surrounding metropolitan area. As patient volume has grown, so has our patients’ need for laboratory services — more than doubling in the past decade. As our clinical programs expand, this demand will only continue to increase.
To meet this demand, Memorial Sloan Kettering is building a state-of-the-art laboratory medicine facility on East 64th Street between First and Second Avenues. The new Laboratory Medicine Building will maximize operational efficiency, allowing the Laboratory Medicine team to provide test results faster and reduce the amount of blood needed from a patient to generate those results.
Laboratory services performed at the facility will include specialized testing in hematology/hemostasis, clinical chemistry, microbiology/ infectious disease, and flow cytometry (a technique used to examine microscopic particles such as cells and chromosomes). A full-service blood bank and stem cell therapy laboratory will be used to prepare blood and cell products for transfusion at the point of care. In addition, the new facility will support a training program for the next generation of laboratory medicine professionals.
As with all new Memorial Sloan Kettering construction, the design and materials will be chosen with sustainability in mind. External design features include rear-yard setbacks on floors 2 and 5, and rear- and front-yard setbacks on the sixth floor.
Excavation/Foundation: June 2014 – January 2015
Target Occupancy Date: Mid-2017
All construction work at the site is scheduled to occur Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–6:00 PM, in accordance with the permit issued by the NYC Department of Buildings. Noise levels will be kept within the limits of the NYC Noise Control Code, and will be minimized as much as possible.
