The Office of Diversity Programs supports research activities focused on the reduction of cancer health disparities and increased participation of minorities and women in clinical trials. Such activities include:
The Partnership for Cancer Research, Training, and Community Outreach (PCOP)
A collaboration between Memorial Sloan-Kettering and The City College of New York (CCNY), PCOP seeks to reduce the unequal burden of cancer through research, training, and outreach. The PCOP is dedicated to helping communities take advantage of collaborations with CCNY and Memorial Sloan-Kettering investigators to design and implement research and programming that will improve health and reduce the burden of cancer. The director of the Office of Diversity Programs is the co-principal investigator of the Partnership’s Community Outreach Core.
The objectives for this partnership are:
- To advance basic and applied cancer research at CCNY
- To advance research on health disparities and cancer burden in minorities at Memorial Sloan-Kettering
- To implement joint education and training opportunities that attract minority scholars at all levels to career paths in cancer research, as well as to support their career development
- To use the combined resources of CCNY and Memorial Sloan-Kettering to develop and evaluate innovative health outreach initiatives designed to reduce the impact of cancer in medically underserved communities
Queens Cancer Center
Beginning in 2005, Memorial Sloan-Kettering joined the Queens Cancer Center (QCC) in a collaboration to provide the highest quality cancer care to the diverse patient population of northwest Queens, New York, through research focused on understanding the nature of cancer disparities experienced by the QCC community, as well as on making Memorial Sloan-Kettering investigator-initiated trials available to QCC patients.
The Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention
Established in 2003, the Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention (RLCCCP) offers comprehensive screening, prevention, and treatment services in addition to support services that include patient navigation and psychosocial support provided by social workers. Partnering with the Office of Clinical Research, the Office of Diversity Programs developed a clinical trial research infrastructure at RLCCCP that gives its patients access to novel therapies through participation in clinical trials.
State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center
University Hospital of Brooklyn (UHB) is the teaching Hospital of SUNY Downstate Medical Center, the only academic medical center providing patient care, education, research, and community services for the nearly five million people living in Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. Memorial Sloan-Kettering has a collaborative working relationship with UHB to enhance and foster its programs in clinical research and infrastructure related to cancer.
