Gynecologic cancer surgeon Yukio Sonoda, who performs minimally invasive procedures when possible, discusses how patients at Memorial Sloan Kettering have the benefit of an entire team of physicians having input into their care.

I am a board-certified gynecologic oncologist who specializes in the surgical treatment of known or suspected tumors of the female genital tract. I work as part of a multidisciplinary team of doctors and nurses who care for women with cancer. My areas of expertise include surgery for cancers of the ovary, endometrium, cervix, vulva, and vagina. I have a special interest in the use of minimally invasive techniques for the treatment of these tumors.

I spent a year in France training with some of the pioneers of advanced laparoscopic and radical vaginal surgery. One of the procedures that I learned is radical vaginal trachelectomy — a fertility-sparing procedure intended for women diagnosed with early cervical cancer. I am also developing new applications for robotic surgery in the field of gynecologic oncology.
