Histiocytosis, also called Langerhans’ cell histiocytosis or eosinophilic granuloma, is a condition marked by the abnormal appearance of histiocytes (macrophages) in the tissues. This disease affects the soft tissues and the bones, and can also affect endocrine function.
This rare disease can be difficult to diagnose. It manifests itself in different forms, some of which occur in children, others in adults. Symptoms include lesions in affected bones, the mouth and gums, and the skin. Doctors may use chemotherapy or low doses of radiation therapy to treat skin or bone lesions. Surgery may also be used to treat or prevent complications from this disease.
