Improvements in diagnostic imaging, combined with an increase in imaging for other health conditions, have led to a rise in the incidence of thyroid tumors, says Lucy Hann, a radiologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. The discovery of more thyroid tumors — including tiny “micro-nodules” — has prompted doctors to perform more biopsies, which has, in turn, led to an increase in the diagnosis of thyroid cancers.
