Leukemia is diagnosed with a bone marrow biopsy, says medical expert Martin Tallman of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Pathologists examine a sample of the bone marrow under a microscope to see how many leukemia cells it contains and to look for abnormal chromosomes. Genetic tests have improved doctors’ ability to distinguish among different types of leukemia and select the most-appropriate treatment for each patient.
