Deborah M. Capko, MD, FACS

I am a surgical oncologist and a member of the Breast Surgical Service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering in New York and New Jersey. I specialize in breast cancer surgery and provide the full range of procedures including breast conservation surgery (lumpectomy), sentinel node biopsy, and mastectomy with immediate breast reconstruction. My special interest is in nipple-sparing mastectomy, a procedure in which the breast tissue is removed through a small incision and which results in an excellent appearance.

I see patients at Memorial Sloan-Kettering’s regional care facility in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. There, I am part of a multidisciplinary breast cancer team that provides state-of-the-art, compassionate care for women with breast cancer. We provide comprehensive breast imaging services, as well as medical and radiation oncology. Our staff also includes a team of nurses and clinical researchers who are also focused on breast care.

I have provided breast cancer care to women in New Jersey for 15 years. Working closely with my colleagues on the Memorial Sloan-Kettering medical staff, I have access to the latest information and discoveries about treating patients with breast cancer. Although my major focus is clinical patient care, I enroll patients in the research trials available at the Basking Ridge facility and also expedite entry into the clinical trials system at our New York City location, when appropriate.

I lecture throughout the area to both public and physician audiences about breast cancer risk and the newest advances in breast cancer treatment. I am a member of the New Jersey Commission on Breast Cancer Research. I am also on the medical advisory board of the North Jersey Susan G. Komen organization and have contributed to their nationally recognized “Teens for the Cure” program.

biopsy (BY-op-see)

The removal of cells or tissues for examination by a pathologist. The pathologist may study the tissue under a microscope or perform other tests on the cells or tissue. There are many different types of biopsy procedures. The most common types include: (1) incisional biopsy, in which only a sample of tissue is removed; (2) excisional biopsy, in which an entire lump or suspicious area is removed; and (3) needle biopsy, in which a sample of tissue or fluid is removed with a needle. When a wide needle is used, the procedure is called a core biopsy. When a thin needle is used, the procedure is called a fine-needle aspiration biopsy.
