Dennis H. Kraus, MD, FACS -- Director; Speech, Hearing, and Rehabilitation Center; Stephen McDermott Chair in Surgery

I am a board-certified otolaryngolgist — a head and neck cancer surgeon who specializes in the treatment of a broad spectrum of tumors that include cancers of the oral cavity and larynx, salivary gland, thyroid, skin, and sinonasal/skull base. As director of Memorial Sloan-Kettering’s Speech, Hearing and Rehabilitation Center, I work with my colleagues to improve patients’ speech and swallowing function after cancer treatment. These are critical functions that have an important impact on quality of life.

Researchers in the center are using functional MRI to study the brain’s role in swallowing function. An understand of this role can help us develop meaningful rehabilitative strategies for swallowing after head and neck cancer treatment.
