As Chief of the Pulmonology Service — a post I have held since 1986 — I oversee a very skilled team of specialists that coordinates the care of patients with pulmonary-related complications of cancer. I also oversee our service’s training program and clinical practice, and am very involved in educating patients—particularly children, teens, and women — on the perils of smoking. I have also testified before the US Congress on the ill effects smoking has on children.
My research interest has been, and continues to be, identifying and characterizing the many causes of lung injury in a person with a weakened immune system (immunocompromised).

For 20 years I also served as head of the Division of General Medicine in the Department of Medicine. The division comprises the cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology and nutrition, general internal medicine, geriatrics, infectious diseases, pulmonary, and renal services.
On a national and international level, I have held or currently hold leadership roles in a number of societies including the American College of Chest Physicians ; the New York State Thoracic Society ; the Task Force on Women, Girls, Tobacco, and Lung Cancer; and the American Thoracic Society . Over the course of my career, I have written more than 120 journal articles and book chapters, and have given lectures all over the world on a host of topics.
In addition to my clinical and administrative duties, I greatly enjoy teaching and mentoring the next generation of doctors and nurses here at the hospital.
