My clinical specialty is Laboratory Hematology and Coagulation with a particular interest in evaluating bleeding and thrombotic problems, especially those arising from platelet function defects.
My research is focused on biomarkers that are predictive of arterial and venous thrombosis, and the interface between cancer and the complement and coagulation systems. My laboratory is currently studying a multifunctional cellular protein designated gC1qR/p33, which appears to be up-regulated in cancer and may play a role in tumor metastasis, inflammation, and thrombosis.
As Vice Chair of the Department of Laboratory Medicine, I am committed to improving patient care through innovative laboratory testing. I strive to support the clinical, research, and teaching missions of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center by building and coordinating multidisciplinary research teams of scientists, clinicians, and industry to integrate advances in science with clinical laboratory diagnosis, defining state-of-the-art, cost-effective diagnostic laboratory utilization, and training the next generation of leaders in laboratory medicine at the technical and professional levels.
