Marc K. Rosenblum, MD

As a neuropathologist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering I analyze tissue samples taken during brain and spinal cord surgery in order to classify tumors based on their cellular characteristics and determine how aggressive they are likely to be. There are more than 120 recognized types of central nervous system tumors, so making a precise diagnosis is essential; the work we do in the laboratory — including molecular genetic assessments — guides treatment decisions.

My colleagues and I work alongside surgeons, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists from the Brain Tumor Center at Memorial Sloan-Kettering to provide the best care for the many patients who come to us every year. I also provide assistance to patients at other hospitals who want a second opinion on their pathology results.

I joined Memorial Sloan-Kettering in 1983. Over the years, I have been involved in dozens of clinical research trials at Memorial Sloan-Kettering and have also collaborated in many national and international group studies. I have published more than 200 articles, book chapters, and abstracts.

I am a member of the editorial board of The American Journal of Surgical Pathology, Brain Pathology, Journal of Neuropathology and Experimental Neurology, and Acta Neuropathologica, and am a reviewer for the journals American Journal of Clinical Oncology, Neuro-Oncology, Pediatric Blood and Cancer, Clinical Neuropathology, and Neuropathology and Applied Neurobiology.

On a national and international level, I have been an invited speaker at many symposia and am a member of my specialty’s organizations, including the United States & Canadian Academy of Pathology, the American Association of Neuropathologists, the International Society of Neuropathology, and the Society for Neuro-Oncology.

I am a founding member and current president of Neuroplex (the New York Association of Neuropathologists), a group of neuropathologists concentrated primarily in the tri-state region that meets regularly to discuss challenging case material and developments in the field.

cancer (KAN-ser)

A term for diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control and can invade nearby tissues. Cancer cells can also spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph systems. There are several main types of cancer. Carcinoma is a cancer that begins in the skin or in tissues that line or cover internal organs. Sarcoma is a cancer that begins in bone, cartilage, fat, muscle, blood vessels, or other connective or supportive tissue. Leukemia is a cancer that starts in blood-forming tissue such as the bone marrow, and causes large numbers of abnormal blood cells to be produced and enter the blood. Lymphoma and multiple myeloma are cancers that begin in the cells of the immune system. Central nervous system cancers are cancers that begin in the tissues of the brain and spinal cord.
