Robert T. Heelan, MD, FACR -- Director, Outpatient Academic Radiology

I am a radiologist who specializes in thoracic radiology, particularly in thoracic tumor diagnosis and in the pre-treatment staging and post-treatment imaging of these tumors. I have investigated the utility of both chest x-rays and CT scans to detect early lung cancer, and I have compared CT, MRI, and PET scanning for staging lung cancer (as part of studies supported by the National Cancer Institute).

I also have expertise in evaluating and staging malignant pleural mesothelioma, a rare tumor affecting the lining of the lungs. I have initiated and currently direct Memorial Sloan-Kettering's low-dose CT screening program for the early detection of lung cancer. In addition, I work closely with other Memorial Sloan-Kettering clinicians as a member of both the Thoracic and the Cancer Prevention and Wellness Disease Management Teams.
