Scott T. Avecilla, MD, PhD

I am a Clinical Pathologist specializing in the field of cellular therapy, which is the use of human cells to treat diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, and other cancers where hematopoietic (blood) stem cell transplantion (i.e. bone marrow transplantion) is the treatment of choice. As Medical Director for the Cell Therapy Service, I work with the Service Chief and laboratory staff management to ensure that all processes and procedures used in the manufacture of cellular therapy products are of the highest quality and safety possible. I also work closely with my colleagues in the Bone Marrow Transplant Service to ensure that the needs of the patients are met in the most state of the art and cost effective manner.

I have a strong interest in pursuing collaborative research and development objectives with my colleagues within the Department of Laboratory Medicine, the Bone Marrow Transplant Service, and other members of the MSK community to optimize Hematopoietic Progenitor Cell harvest protocols, develop better laboratory assays to standardize current Hematopoietic Progenitor Cell (HPC) potency assays, and to work with the Flow Cytometry Laboratory to investigate enhanced flow cytometry processing and analysis protocols for HPC product characterization.
