Shyam S. Rao, MD, PhD

I am a radiation oncologist with a special interest in treating brain tumors and cancers of the head and neck. I specialize in the use of intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) and stereotactic radiosurgery. Using these advanced techniques, we can effectively treat tumors while reducing the chance of side effects. As these cancers are often treated with a combination of therapies, I work closely with the surgeons and medical oncologists here at Memorial Sloan-Kettering. I strive to provide state-of-the-art treatment while working closely with my patients to provide quality care.

As a physician-scientist, I am also active in translational research to advance the treatment of cancer. There is increasing evidence that the non-cancerous cells and extracellular stroma that reside close to cancer cells contribute to tumor growth and survival. This tumor microenvironment, which includes endothelial cells and cytokines, serves as a unique target for anticancer therapies. My research focuses on modulating the tumor microenvironment to increase the effectiveness of radiation therapy.
