I work as part of a team of doctors who manage medical and oncologic emergencies in Memorial Sloan Kettering's Urgent Care Center. We see patients around the clock for emergencies related to cancer and its treatment. Since I started working in the Urgent Care Center in 1994, it has grown into a full-fledged emergency room for cancer patients, where we now treat an estimated 1,300 patients each month. I get great satisfaction from knowing that I have helped patients as they have struggled with cancer and its treatment, and I am proud of the unique service that we provide to help cancer patients get the urgent care they need. Memorial Sloan Kettering has one of only two Urgent Care Centers in the nation for cancer patients.

Speaking several foreign languages, including Italian, Spanish, and French, helps me reach out to patients of many ethnic backgrounds who come to Memorial Sloan Kettering, including those from abroad who seek treatment through our Bobst International Center. As acting medical director of the Urgent Care Center, I am also involved in coordinating academic events in urgent care, lecturing to emergency room physicians who work in general service hospitals, and teaching medical students and residents.
