Yuman Fong, Memorial Sloan-Kettering’s Vice Chair of Technology Development and a surgeon who treats patients with liver, bile duct, gallbladder, and pancreas diseases, talks about surgical advances that improve outcomes for patients.

(02:00)

I have spent my career at Memorial Sloan-Kettering, devoting my clinical practice to helping people with diseases of the liver, bile duct, gallbladder, and pancreas. My patients with liver cancer include those with hepatocellular carcinoma, cholangiocarcinoma, or cancers that have spread (metastasized) to the liver from the colon. I also have a lot of experience treating patients with neuroendocrine tumors.

By the time I arrived for my surgical fellowship in 1993, I had already focused on this specialty, but it was while training under our inspiring [now former] Chair of Surgery, Dr. Murray Brennan, that I realized that Memorial Sloan-Kettering — where I could pursue an active research program aimed at improving survival and quality of life for cancer patients — would be a perfect fit for me. It still is.

After performing thousands of operations, I am still struck by the tremendously positive impact that surgery can have on a person’s life and on his or her loved ones – and that, when done correctly, it will always be an essential part of any treatment strategy that aims to cure.
