Gastrointestinal Oncology Service Chief Leonard Saltz describes advances in rectal cancer treatment being achieved through translational research and clinical trials at Memorial Sloan Kettering and elsewhere in this Grand Rounds presentation titled “Curing Rectal Cancer, One Individual at a Time.” Treatment today must be individualized to each patient's tumor biology, says Dr. Saltz. Some patients have achieved a complete response with preoperative chemotherapy alone, while others require preoperative radiation or chemotherapy plus surgery. Dr. Saltz also discusses mutations in rectal cancers that may serve as therapeutic targets, advances in immunotherapies, and cancer stem cells resistant to chemotherapy.
