For Healthcare Professionals: Updates in Colorectal Cancer

Hepatic arterial infusion (HAI) therapy is a method for treating liver metastases in patients with colorectal cancer. In HAI therapy, doctors implant a pump inside the patient that delivers chemotherapy directly to the tumor in the liver. Nancy Kemeny, MD, has led efforts at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center to show the effectiveness of HAI therapy. Here, she reviews the HAI clinical procedure and discusses how its use extends survival and improves quality of life when compared to the use of systemic chemotherapy alone.
