Urologic surgeon Jonathan Coleman discusses refinements in surgical approaches and techniques that have enabled surgeons to perform many kidney procedures in a less invasive manner. Partial nephrectomy is performed more frequently than in the past, sparing normal tissue and enabling patients to retain some kidney function. Robotic procedures are increasingly being used in complex cases and to treat large tumors of up to even 4 to 7 cm in size. Less invasive laparoscopic approaches require small incisions, result in speedier recovery, and are associated with the same overall survival as conventional open surgery.
