When Mark Popadick was 15, his family traveled from their home in Buffalo, New York, to Memorial Sloan-Kettering in New York City so he could undergo treatment for chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). After a bone marrow transplant, which cured the cancer but weakened his immune system, Mr. Popadick experienced fear about cancer recurrence that left him emotionally isolated.
Years later, sharing his story with a friend who needed a bone marrow transplant gave Mr. Popadick the confidence to get through treatment for thyroid cancer and a CML recurrence, as well as a hip replacement caused by the late effects of his cancer treatment. Now, Mr. Popadick encourages other survivors to share their own experiences, volunteer, and donate bone marrow.
