Integrative Medicine: Group Class Schedule & Descriptions

Through Integrative Medicine, Memorial Sloan Kettering offers more group fitness and yoga classes than any other independent cancer center, regionally or nationally. Physical activity is one of the best methods to prevent and treat physical side effects, such as fatigue, muscle weakness and bone density loss, and achieve long term wellness goals.

Beyond the physical benefits, our group classes and personal training sessions are opportunities to regain emotional strength. From week to week, patients and survivors build camaraderie while they are exercising and having fun. Classes and services are open to all; patients, survivors, caregivers and the community.

Empowering Yoga

Empowering Yoga works to improve strength and flexibility. The mix of yoga positions and transitions opens the heart, challenges the core, strengthens the legs, and revitalizes the body for active living.

Focused Fitness for Women

Focused Fitness for Women is geared for our female patient populations, particularly breast and GYN cancer survivors. Common side effects these patients experience after surgery can include lymphedema or “frozen shoulder”. This class can help reduce the risk of lymphedema and improve range of motion if the condition has already been diagnosed. Exercises in this class will target areas of the body, including abs, legs, seat, lower back and thighs, without jumping and running that can put strain on the joints.

Just Breathe

Just Breathe focuses on taking deep breaths, the quickest way to decrease stress and to engage the mind and body in a relaxation response. Classes are held on the first Thursday of the month only.

Martial Arts & Meditation

This class combines traditional martial arts exercises with yogic breathing, guided imagery and meditation. This is a low-impact but an effective workout for the body and the mind. The concentration involved allows you to block out stress for the hour; this class can be the 60 minutes of “me” time we all look for.

Mindfulness Practice Group

This weekly group focuses on the practices of mindfulness meditation, the foundation of all meditation traditions. While mindfulness meditation is simple to learn, its benefits are profound and long lasting. A brief conversation with the group leader is required prior to participating, and can be arranged with the front desk. Space is limited; pre-registration is encouraged.
