We also offer genetic consultations for patients with a strong family history of cancer. Women who have a higher-than-average risk of getting breast cancer because of a personal or family history or a genetic mutation may be eligible to participate in our Special Surveillance Breast Program.

All pathology specimens from biopsies are sent to Memorial Sloan-Kettering in Manhattan for evaluation, where pathologists who are experts in breast cancer evaluate each slide. We also provide surgical consultations for patients with palpable lumps or abnormal mammograms, as well as for patients who already have been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Radiation therapy consultations and treatments are offered at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center Commack. Our state-of-the-art equipment features a computed tomography (CT)-based treatment planning system and intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). This way we deliver a more targeted and uniform dose to the tumor than standard radiation, thus sparing surrounding healthy tissue. We offer treatment to women with breast cancer who require either whole breast irradiation after lumpectomy or chest wall irradiation after mastectomy. Patient care is complemented by our nurses, who are specially trained in helping patients cope with the side effects of radiation therapy.
At all Memorial Sloan-Kettering facilities, our doctors and nurses work together as a team, in what is called the Collaborative Practice Model. Preoperative and postoperative nursing care is provided at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center Commack. Nurses can also help patients with referrals for support groups, postmastectomy prostheses, and other services.
