There are an estimated 12 million cancer survivors in the United States, according to Dr. Jimmie Holland, a psychiatrist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and a founder of the cancer survivorship movement. In the past, the stigma of a cancer diagnosis made it difficult for survivors to discuss their concerns about life after treatment. Today, Memorial Sloan Kettering’s Resources for Life After Cancer program and advocacy groups offer a variety of services to help cancer survivors and their families cope with the late effects of cancer therapy, anxiety about secondary cancers and cancer recurrence, and other emotional issues.
