Transplantation is a treatment approach used for several forms of leukemia as well as other cancers and hematologic diseases, says Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center post-transplant specialist Christine Iovino, RN. Several types of transplants are now available, and which is safest and most effective depends on a patient’s age, disease, and overall health, she says. Ms. Iovino briefly describes each transplant approach as well as the chemotherapy and/or radiation regimens used to “condition” patients before the transplant.
