Patients who receive chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant may experience anxiety, sleep problems, nausea/vomiting, and fatigue. Acupuncture may help relieve some of these symptoms. The purpose of this study is to see if acupuncture is helpful for controlling symptoms in patients with multiple myeloma who are receiving chemotherapy and an autologous stem cell transplant (return of their own stem cells after chemotherapy).
Patients will be randomly assigned to one of two groups: One group will receive traditional acupuncture, and the other group will receive an acupuncture-like procedure that creates the same sensation. Both groups will receive their treatments once a day for five days starting the day after chemotherapy. Researchers will compare symptoms between the two groups.
