Under the auspices of the Barbara Ziegler Palliative Care Education Program, the student will learn how to treat pain and how to manage common problems in palliative medicine by joining the Pain and Palliative Care Service in the Department of Medicine at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, the first pain and palliative care service within a cancer hospital in the United States. The student will follow patients daily under the supervision of Pain and Palliative Care faculty and fellows and will be expected to participate fully in daily rounds, family meetings, and conferences. When appropriate, students may also participate in the outpatient clinic and accompany members of the Supportive Care Program on home visits; there may also be the possibility to attend outpatients clinics. Students are also invited to attend the weekly Pain and Palliative Care patient care conference and Grand Rounds, and other relevant programs at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the Weill Medical College of Cornell University. Students are provided a syllabus, reading list, and individual tutorial sessions with faculty. Applicants must provide a short statement reflecting their interest in non-interventional pain management and their relevant experience(s).
