Clinical Hematology (Benign) (M-135)

Description

This elective is designed to give students an introduction to the pathophysiology and management of disorders in benign hematology. The service performs inpatient and outpatient consults for thrombosis, bleeding disorders, anemia, and platelet abnormalities.

Under the supervision of attending physicians and hematology fellows, students will function as part of a consultative team participating in hematological diagnosis and therapy. The rotation includes participation in a range of educational activities; including, hematology-oncology grand rounds and small group discussions of the cases of the week. Students are expected to gain proficiency in case presentations and practical areas; such as, the interpretation of peripheral blood smears and bone marrow aspirates.

Notes:

  1. For any holidays listed, students must consult with the Medical Student Coordinator to determine whether they are released from their responsibilities.
  2. In the Clinical Medicine and Oncology Sub-Internship, students will be expected to take "short call" once or twice during the week in addition to one Saturday and/or Sunday during the four-week elective. No overnight call is taken.
