The Department of Laboratory Medicine at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center offers a novel training program focused on consultative laboratory medicine and administration. Learning experiences, which range from mentored clinical service, didactic sessions, journal club, management discussions, and research, are designed to educate the next generation of leaders in laboratory medicine. Clinical responsibilities include daily sign-out of complex cases in hematology, coagulation, and clinical chemistry-protein electrophoresis. In addition, the department provides a full range of training opportunities in flow cytometry, cellular immunology, clinical microbiology, and translational research. Training is customized to fellows’ interests and career objectives.
Memorial Sloan-Kettering provides a rich learning environment for laboratory medicine fellows with a diversity of clinical and management experiences. The laboratory features a large test volume, a highly sophisticated test menu, laboratory automation, new facilities (effective 2015), an integrated translational research program, and access to sophisticated clinical and research databases. Proximity and affiliation with NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center and The Rockefeller University allow trainees to become part of a world-class medical and scientific community.
