The brain tumor team at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center specializes in the care of patients with primary and metastatic tumors of the brain, including pituitary tumors, acoustic neuromas, and skull base tumors. We take a multidisciplinary approach to care and boast the most-advanced surgical technologies, including intraoperative stereotactic guidance systems, endoscopy, direct brain motor and speech mapping, functional MRI mapping, surgical microscopes, and stereotactic radiosurgery. Our team’s research interests include radiation biology, gene therapy, and the use of agents to block the formation of blood vessels within tumors to stop their growth, as well as molecular mechanisms underlying the development of central nervous system tumors and the potential use of neural and pluripotent stem cells to repair brain tissue follow injury or disease.
The pediatric brain tumor team focuses on the surgical treatment of children with brain and spinal disorders, including skull base tumors, pituitary tumors, and tumors of the clivus. Our experts have paved the way for clinical studies of pediatric brain tumors and the possibility of effective treatments for children. We are currently leading a phase I clinical trial for children with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of delivering different doses.
This spine tumor team specializes in the care of patients with primary and metastatic tumors of the spine and spinal cord, as well as those patients with sinonasal and skull base tumors and degenerative spinal disorders. We take a team approach to treatment, bringing together experts in highly specialized areas of cancer care. We have a weekly multidisciplinary clinic and tumor board to facilitate and coordinate patient care. Our team evaluates more than 1,500 spine tumors a year, with the goal of creating the most-effective individualized treatment plan for each patient to improve neurologic function and mobility, stabilize the spine, control local tumor growth, and ultimately improve quality of life. Our team’s research interests include improving the delivery and effectiveness of radiosurgery as well as designing and overseeing longitudinal studies and prospective clinical trials designed to determine the optimal treatment of patients with spinal tumors.
