Giving 1-methyl-d-tryptophan to patients who have received chemotherapy for cancer may help kill more tumor cells. It is a type of enzyme inhibitor and immunosuppressant. Also called D-1MT.

It is a type of topoisomerase I inhibitor.

It is also being studied in the treatment of other types of cancer. 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate affects many cell actions and may cause tumor cells to die. It is a type of phorbol ester. Also called tetradecanoylphorbol acetate and TPA.

A liquid that has been promoted as a treatment for a wide range of diseases, including cancer. The ingredients thought to be in 126–F have been tested, and none of them have been shown to be effective in treating any form of cancer. 126–F is not available in the United States. Also called Cancell, Cantron, Jim’s Juice, JS–101, JS–114, Protocel, and Sheridan’s Formula.

A drug that is used in the treatment of acne and psoriasis and is being studied in cancer prevention. It is a type of retinoid. Also called isotretinoin.

It is made of a substance called iobenguane linked to a radioactive substance called iodine I 131. T describes the size of the tumor and whether it has invaded nearby tissue; N describes regional lymph nodes that are involved; and M describes distant metastasis (spread of cancer from one body part to another). The system gets periodically updated, most recently in 1997.

In addition to CT imaging, supplemental imaging modalities, such as magnetic resonance imaging or positron emission tomography, can be used to improve target delineation. With 3-dimensional conformal radiation therapy, conformal beams are used to shape the dose delivered to the target, and wedges or compensators can be used to optimize the dose distribution. Conformal beams are shaped either with a high-density material (e.g., Cerrobend) that allows beam contouring or with multi-leaf collimators, which are an array of high-density leaves (usually tungsten) situated in the head of the linear accelerator (LINAC) whose position is controlled via independent stepping motors that allow beam shaping. Wedges are high-density devices that are placed on the head of the LINAC to act as a tissue compensator and/or beam modifier. The effect of a wedge can be created by a moving jaw at the head of the LINAC. With 3-dimensional conformal radiation therapy, variable field weighting and/or use of different energies (higher energies are more penetrating) are additional tools that enable optimization of the dose distribution. A hormone found in the brain, platelets, digestive tract, and pineal gland. It acts both as a neurotransmitter (a substance that nerves use to send messages to one another) and a vasoconstrictor (a substance that causes blood vessels to narrow). A lack of 5-hydroxytryptamine in the brain is thought to be a cause of depression. Also called serotonin.

A compound that contains the radioisotope yttrium Y 90 linked to the chemical biotin. Biotin is a molecule that binds strongly to the chemical streptavidin. 90Y-DOTA-biotin will find tumor cells in the body that have been targeted by an antibody linked to streptavidin and kill them. It is being studied together with CC49-streptavidin in the treatment of cancer. Also called yttrium Y 90 DOTA-biotin.
