Glossary: growth hormone

An organ that makes one or more substances, such as hormones, digestive juices, sweat, tears, saliva, or milk. Endocrine glands release the substances directly into the bloodstream. Exocrine glands release the substances into a duct or opening to the inside or outside of the body.

A type of sugar; the chief source of energy for living organisms.

A molecule made up of amino acids that are needed for the body to function properly. Proteins are the basis of body structures such as skin and hair and of substances such as enzymes, cytokines, and antibodies.

A protein made by the pituitary gland that helps control body growth and the use of glucose and fat in the body. Also called growth hormone.
