In his welcoming remarks at the 2010 Samuel and May Rudin Awards for Excellence in Nursing Ceremony, Memorial Hospital Physician-in-Chief Robert E. Wittes proclaimed that, while 2010 was designated the International Year of the Nurse, “I like to think at this institution, every year is the year of the nurse.

At the ceremony, held early on the morning of May 12 in the Rockefeller Research Laboratories Auditorium, five Memorial Sloan Kettering nurses and a nursing assistant were recognized for exemplary service in patient care. The award winners were nominated by fellow nurses, administrators, physicians, and patients.

Elizabeth Nelkin McCormick, Chief Nursing Officer, thanked the Rudin family and the Samuel and May Rudin Foundation for their continued support of the awards program, adding, “Every day I am humbled, honored, and inspired to lead this world-class nursing organization.

We celebrate some awardees today whom you have selected as being special,” Dr. Wittes said. “But I’d like us all to celebrate the general excellence of nursing here front to back.
