On June 17, Memorial Sloan Kettering’s Junior Faculty Council presented its 2008 Award for Excellence in Mentoring to Alan N. Houghton, Vice Chair for Academic Affairs in the Department of Medicine and incumbent of the Virginia and Daniel K. Ludwig Clinical Chair. The council cited Dr. Houghton as a role model and “a generous mentor who strives to have us all succeed.”

A pioneer in cancer immunology, Dr. Houghton served as Chief of the Clinical Immunology Service in the Department of Medicine from 1989 to 2005 and was Chair of the Immunology Program in the Sloan Kettering Institute from 1995 to 2004. He joined the Center as a clinical fellow in 1977.

“I love teaching,” said Dr. Houghton. “It’s in my genes and in my soul. I’ve trained many fellows and am very proud of all of them for their accomplishments.”
