Adult Recreation Pavilion
Yolanda Toth, Director of Adult Recreation

At times, anyone can use refuge and respite from cancer and its treatment. Memorial Sloan-Kettering's Patient Recreation Pavilion offers adult patients and their visitors a wide range of arts and crafts activities, a well-equipped library, an outdoor terrace, and scheduled entertainment events.

Healthful Diversions

Our recreation therapists lead activities such as copper enameling and evening watercolor relaxation, and other healthful diversions like woodworking, origami, and stained glass. Other evening activities include bingo and Las Vegas nights. Live performances by outside entertainers, like students from The Juilliard School, are held several times during the week. Crafts and activities are also available to be done in patients' rooms.

Hospital volunteers arrange flowers for patients' rooms and clinics in the pavilion's fully equipped flower room.

A Sanctuary from the Hospital Routine

Many patients come to our penthouse pavilion just to "get away from it all," enjoy the sunlight and the view, meet family and friends in relaxed surroundings, contribute to the eternal jigsaw puzzle, play pool, or snuggle with a good book. Patients visit us before outpatient appointments, and some have been known to schedule appointments to coincide with our events.

A Library with Something for Everyone

Our Patients' Library has something for everyone. More than 12,000 general-interest books, magazines, and audiobooks and music tapes; comfortable chairs; knowledgable and friendly staff -- all the pleasures of a good private reading room. There is a special section devoted to health and medicine. Our collection includes selected titles in complementary health, including guided imagery, yoga, nutrition, and stress management. A selection of foreign language titles is also available.
