1. Who is eligible for the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center Medical Student Summer Fellowship Program?

Only US medical students currently in their first or second year at an accredited United States medical school are eligible. Students must have already entered their first year of medical school prior to June 2008 and must not have begun their third year of medical school as of June 2008.

2. What are my chances of getting into the program?

Each year aproximately 40 students are selected from an applicant pool of several hundred.

3. What materials do I need to submit to be considered for selection?

The following items must be received no later than February 8, 2008, in order to be eligible for selection:

  1. Completed online application.
  2. Letter from the Office of the Dean at your medical school indicating that you are a first or second year medical student in good standing. Please send to:

    Medical Student Coordinator
    Summer Student Fellowship Program
    Graduate Medical Education
    Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center
    1275 York Avenue, Box 187
    New York, NY 10065

Note: The Dean's letter must be postmarked by January 25, 2008 in order to reach our office by the February 8, 2008, application deadline.

4. How will I know that my online application has been received?

You will receive an e-mail confirming receipt of your application. Please read this confirmation carefully and print a copy for your records.

5. Can I send the application form in a hard copy format via postal mail?

No. The application, CV, and personal statement will only be accepted through the Web site.  With the exception of the dean's letter, hard copy items will be returned to the student without review.

6. When is the deadline for submission?

All materials must be received no later than February 8, 2008. We strongly encourage students to get this done as early as possible, as it often takes some time to secure the dean's letter. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

7. Can I submit recommendations?

No. Recommendations are not required and will not be considered in the review process.

8. What are the dates of the program?

June 16-August 8 OR June 23-August 15

Students may choose either session subject to sponsor approval. Students are required to be in attendance through the end of the last day of the program.

9. May I participate in the program for a shorter time period than the dates listed?

No. Accepted students are required to complete the full eight-weeks of the program on site. There are NO exceptions to this requirement. Students unable to make such a commitment are asked not to apply.

10. Does Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center provide housing for medical students?

No. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide housing for medical students. It is recommended that you secure housing as soon as possible, as New York City accommodations can be difficult to find and quite expensive.

11. When will I find out if I've been accepted to the program?

Students who have been accepted to the program will be notified on a rolling basis beginning March 1 and continuing through March 31. All students will be notified by March 31, 2008.

12. If I am accepted, how long will I have to confirm that I will participate in the fellowship?

You must notify us with a decision within three days.  If you do not reply within the time frame, we will have to offer the position to another student. We assume that all applicants are seriously considering participation in this program.

13. How do I get to the online application?

Applications will be available in early January 2008. To get to the online application, you must be on a page with a specific project description. Click on "Find a Summer Fellowship" to view a list of all the project titles. You can further sort by department or, you may choose to click on individual titles of interest. Once you select a project title of interest, you will see a more detailed project description. At the end of the description is a beige box titled "Summer Fellowship Online Application." When you have selected your top three choices, click on "Apply Online!"

14. Whom should I contact with further questions?

If you have a question that was not answered in the FAQ section, contact the medical student coordinator by e-mail at sumstudent@mskcc.org.
