The Center's comprehensive treatment programs are designed according to the type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma with which each patient has been diagnosed. Treatment involves the use of combination chemotherapy agents. In select cases, radiation is included as a part of the treatment regimen.

Investigational Therapies

Memorial Sloan-Kettering investigators are assessing several novel therapies for the treatment of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. These investigational approaches are sometimes offered to eligible patients through the clinical trial process. As part of these research efforts, our Center is evaluating the effectiveness of a new treatment for children with recurrent non-Hodgkin's lymphoma whose cancer recurs in the central nervous system (which includes the brain and the spinal cord). The components of the treatment are not new, but the way they are combined and the frequency with which they are given is new. This treatment eliminates the use of radiation therapy, which has been shown to cause some neurologic side effects in patients with leukemia or lymphoma of the central nervous system.

Chemotherapy drugs taken by mouth or by injection do not reach the brain or spinal cord in adequate quantities to be effective, so certain chemotherapy drugs used in the study will be injected directly into the spinal fluid. Other chemotherapies will be given orally, intravenously, or by injection. For up-to-date details about current clinical trials at Memorial Sloan-Kettering, please see our clinical trials for pediatric lymphomas.

Investigators at Memorial Sloan-Kettering are now studying the molecular basis for the development of lymphomas in children. Identification of the specific molecular alterations seen in childhood lymphomas will help our doctors develop targeted approaches to treat these diseases. As better understanding of the biology of non-Hodgkin lymphoma is determined, drugs which target the cancer are being developed and utilized to establish more effective therapy for this disease.

Long-Term Care

Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center provides comprehensive care to a large population of long-term survivors who were previously treated for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Counseling and treatment are provided regarding potential risks or occurrence of late effects and issues pertaining to quality of life in long-term survivors of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. This support is provided as a collaborative approach between the oncology team and the Survivorship Programs.
