Quality of Life Outcomes Following Treatment for Esophageal Cancer

[Protocol 03-083]

Full Title :
QUALITY OF LIFE OUTCOMES FOLLOWING TREATMENT FOR ESOPHAGEAL CANCER
Purpose :

The goal of this study is to evaluate how treatment for esophageal cancer affects a patient's quality of life. The findings of this study may help doctors understand how this disease and its treatment affect a patient's lifestyle, diet, exercise, support system, and overall quality of life. They hope this study will provide important information that can be used to develop programs to improve the quality of life of patients with esophageal cancer.

Participants in this study will receive several printed questionnaires that ask about their quality of life, dietary habits, symptoms, social support, and physical activity. Patients who have not received treatment will be asked to complete these questionnaires before treatment begins, before surgery, at the first post-operative visit, and 6 and 12 months after surgery. Patients who have already undergone treatment, including surgery, will be asked to complete the questionnaires only once.

Eligibility :

To be eligible for this study, patients must meet several criteria, including but not limited to the following:

  • Patients must either be newly diagnosed with esophageal cancer and be planning to undergo esophagectomy (surgical removal of esophageal tissue), or have completed surgery for esophageal cancer at least 18 months ago and remain disease-free.
  • Patients who are anticipated to need a laryngectomy (removal of the voice box) as part of their surgery may not participate.
  • Participants must be able to speak, read, and write English.
  • Patients must be age 18 or older.

For more information and to see if you are eligible for this study, please contact Dr. Manjit Bains at 212-639-7450.
