A Phase III Trial of Acupuncture for the Treatment of Chronic Post-Chemotherapy Fatigue

[Protocol 04-081]

Full Title :
ACUPUNCTURE FOR THE TREATMENT OF CHRONIC POST-CHEMOTHERAPY FATIGUE: A RANDOMIZED, PHASE III TRIAL
Purpose :

Many patients who have gone through chemotherapy experience fatigue. They feel a lack of energy and feel like it is harder to do the things they normally do. They may have trouble concentrating or feel exhausted for no clear reason. There is currently no standard treatment for this kind of fatigue.

Previous studies have shown that acupuncture may decrease fatigue. The aim of this study is to see if acupuncture can reduce fatigue in cancer patients treated with chemotherapy. Investigators will also study the relationships between fatigue, quality of life, mood and level of physical activity.

In this study, the acupuncture treatment will be given once a week for 6 weeks. During an acupuncture treatment, very thin, sterile needles are placed certain points in the skin. These needles do not feel like injections. They are kept in place for 20 minutes. During the study, patients will also answer questionnaires about their fatigue, mood, and quality of life, and their physical activity will be monitored.

Eligibility :

To be eligible for this study, patients must meet several criteria, including but not limited to the following:

  • Patients must have received chemotherapy as treatment for cancer and complain of moderate to severe fatigue afterward (but not before chemotherapy). Patients with anemia may not participate, since fatigue due to anemia is treatable with other means.
  • At least 60 days must have passed since the patient last received chemotherapy.
  • Patients must be between the ages of 18 and 64.
