Attitudes Towards Prophylactic Colectomy in HNPCC Patients
[Protocol 04-127]
- Full Title :
- ATTITUDES TOWARDS PROPHYLACTIC COLECTOMY IN HNPCC PATIENTS
- Purpose :
The purpose of this study is to learn more about individuals with a family history of colon cancer, and about their attitudes toward ways of reducing their risk for this disease. In particular, some people with a family history of colon cancer have a pattern called hereditary non-polyposis colon cancer (HNPCC), which means having several people on the same side of the family with colon, endometrial, ovarian, or other cancers in the abdomen.
People with an HNPCC pattern of cancer in their families may have heard about a type of surgery called "prophylactic colectomy," in which the entire colon is removed either to prevent colon cancer from coming back, or to prevent it from occurring in the first place. Investigators hope to learn about how people make decisions about whether or not they are interested in this type of surgery. Even if someone has never heard of this option, or think it might not be for them, it is important to learn their views.
The study consists of one telephone interview that will last about 30 minutes. Questions will cover thoughts and feelings about being at risk for colon cancer, attitudes about prophylactic surgery, and whether one might consider this type of surgery. The study is an interview only, and does not involve any kind of medical treatment. The interview will be confidential.
- Eligibility :
To be eligible for this study, patients must meet several criteria, including but not limited to the following:
- Participants must have a personal and/or family history of cancer consistent with HNPCC, and therefore would potentially be candidates for prophylactic colectomy. Those who have already had their entire colon removed may not participate.
- Participants in this protocol should not have had genetic counseling and testing for HNPCC. (Those who have may participate in a different protocol.)
- Participants from families with familial adenomatous polyposis (a different condition that also increases colorectal cancer risk) may not participate.
- Participants must speak English.
- Participants must be age 18 or older.
