Radiotherapy Plus Sildenafil (Viagra) to Preserve Erectile Function Versus Radiotherapy Alone in Localized Prostate Cancer

[Protocol 05-007]

Full Title :
RANDOMIZED PROSPECTIVE STUDY COMPARING PROPHYLACTIC AND ON DEMAND SILDENAFIL CITRATE USAGE ADMINISTERED DURING AND AFTER RADIOTHERAPY IN COMBINATION WITH OR WITHOUT HORMONE THERAPY VERSUS RADIOTHERAPY ALONE FOR THE PRESERVATION OF ERECTILE FUNCTION IN POTENT PATIENTS WITH CLINICALLY LOCALIZED PROSTATE CANCER
Purpose :

Radiation therapy for prostate cancer may impair a man's ability to have a normal erection. Complete loss of erectile function after radiation treatment occurs in 40 percent to 50 percent of patients. Medications such as sildenafil (Viagra) can restore the ability to achieve an erection in nearly 70 percent of patients.

The purpose of this study is to determine if taking sildenafil every day starting immediately before, during, and for about 6 months after radiation therapy can reduce the risk of long-term erectile dysfunction in men with localized prostate cancer. Patients will be randomly assigned to have radiation therapy with sildenafil or a placebo.

Eligibility :

To be eligible for this study, patients must meet several criteria, including but not limited to the following:

  • Patients must have a confirmed diagnosis of localized prostate cancer that will be treated with external radiation therapy and/or brachytherapy.
  • Patients must have adequate erectile function before beginning radiation therapy.
  • Patients may not participate if they have had prior prostate surgery, radiotherapy, or cryotherapy, previous hormonal therapy, or are currently taking nitrate medication.

For more information and to see if you are eligible for this study, please contact Dr. Michael Zelefsky at 212-639-6802.
