Neoadjuvant Hormonal Therapy in Combination with Vorinostat Followed by Radical Prostatectomy for Localized Prostate Cancer
[Protocol 06-160]
- Full Title :
- NEOADJUVANT ANDROGEN DEPLETION IN COMBINATION WITH VORINOSTAT FOLLOWED BY RADICAL PROSTATECTOMY FOR LOCALIZED PROSTATE CANCER: TOTAL ANDROGEN-RECEPTOR GENE EXPRESSION TARGETED THERAPY (TARGET)(NCI# 7864)
- Purpose :
Prostate cancer cells need a male hormone called testosterone to grow. Hormonal therapies work by reducing the levels of cancer-fueling testosterone in the body.
The purpose of this study is to determine if giving men with localized prostate cancer hormonal therapy and another drug called vorinostat before surgery can shrink prostate tumors. The goal of this approach is to cause the body to stop making testosterone, and then determine whether this combination of drugs can cause the complete death of cancer cells (which will be determined by analyzing tissue samples obtained at the time of prostate removal surgery).
Vorinostat is a drug approved for treating a rare type of lymphoma. It is also being evaluating for the treatment of other types of cancer, including prostate cancer.
- Eligibility :
To be eligible for this study, patients must meet several criteria, including but not limited to the following:
- Patients must have a confirmed diagnosis of localized prostate cancer and be candidates for radical prostatectomy (surgical removal of the prostate).
- Patients may not have had prior hormonal therapy, chemotherapy, or herbal therapies for prostate cancer.
- Patients must be age 18 or older.
