Structural Imaging and Cognitive Functions in Adult Stem Cell Transplant Recipients Treated with Radiation Therapy and Chemotherapy
[Protocol 06-162]
- Full Title :
- STRUCTURAL IMAGING AND COGNITIVE FUNCTIONS IN ADULT STEM CELL TRANSPLANT RECIPIENTS TREATED WITH CHEMOTHERAPY ALONE OR IN COMBINATION WITH RADIOTHERAPY
- Purpose :
The purpose of this study is to learn about possible changes in brain anatomy and in thinking abilities, such as memory skills, in patients with acute myeloid leukemia, myelodysplastic syndrome, or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma who receive treatment with total body irradiation and chemotherapy before undergoing stem cell transplantation.
Patients will undergo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies of the brain and will receive paper-and-pencil tests assessing attention and memory (cognitive tests). They will also be asked to complete questionnaires about mood and fatigue.
- Eligibility :
To be eligible for this study, patients must meet several criteria, including but not limited to the following:
- Patients must have a confirmed diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia, myelodysplastic syndrome, or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in complete remission, and be candidates for conditioning treatment with total body irradiation and chemotherapy prior to receiving a stem cell transplant from a matched donor at MSKCC.
- Patients must be able to speak English.
- Patients must be able to undergo MRI.
- Patients must be at least age 18 but no older than 65.
