A Phase II Study of Neoadjuvant Gemcitabine and Oxaliplatin in Patients with Potentially Resectable Previously Untreated Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma
[Protocol 07-113]
- Full Title :
- A PHASE II STUDY OF NEOADJUVANT GEMCITABINE AND OXALIPLATIN IN PATIENTS WITH POTENTIALLY RESECTABLE PREVIOUSLY UNTREATED PANCREATIC ADENOCARCINOMA
- Purpose :
This study is being conducted to assess a new approach to treating cancer of the pancreas that has not spread. Pancreatic cancer is very difficult to treat. Even after surgery, it often comes back. In the past, doctors have tried to give patients chemotherapy and radiation therapy after surgery. Many patients were not well enough after surgery to receive these treatments, however, and the cancer often came back even for those who could receive them.
In this study, researchers will evaluate giving chemotherapy before surgery in patients with pancreatic cancer that is localized and can be surgically removed. The drugs to be used include gemcitabine (which is already approved for treating pancreatic cancer) and oxaliplatin (which is approved for treating colorectal cancer but not pancreatic cancer). Studies have suggested that gemcitabine plus oxaliplatin together may be effective when given to patients with earlier stages of pancreas cancer.
- Eligibility :
To be eligible for this study, patients must meet several criteria, including but not limited to the following:
- Patients must have a confirmed diagnosis of localized adenocarcinoma of the pancreas that is amenable to surgical removal and has not yet been treated.
- Patients must not be confined to a bed or chair for more than half of their normal waking hours.
- Patients must be age 18 or older.
For more information and to inquire about eligibility for this study, please contact Dr. Eileen O'Reilly at 212-639-6672 or Dr. Peter Allen at 212-639-5132.
