Pilot Study of Molecular Imaging Using Positron Emission Tomography (PET) to Determine Protein and Gene Expression Signatures of Colonic Polyps
[Protocol 07-114]
- Full Title :
- PILOT STUDY OF EX-VIVO MOLECULAR POLYP IMAGING USING 18-F FLUORODEOXYGLUCOSE (FGD) POSITRON EMISSION TOMOGRAPHY (PET) IN THE DETERMINATION OF PROTEIN AND GENE EXPRESSION SIGNATURES OF PREMALIGNANT POLYPS
- Purpose :
Polyps in the colon are small benign growths that have the potential to become cancerous. The purpose of this study is to find out if we can use PET scans to predict which colon polyps may become malignant if left inside the colon to grow.
Researchers will make a series of measurements on colon polyps in patients with colon cancer who are having the cancer and the polyps surgically removed, using positron emission tomography (PET) scanning to determine if the polyps consume more glucose than normal tissue. They will also study whether these growths have specific types of changes in their genes and proteins compared to normal tissues. Similar measurements will also be made on patients' colon cancer tissue.
- Eligibility :
To be eligible for this study, patients must meet several criteria, including but not limited to the following:
- Patients must have a confirmed diagnosis of a colon cancer or polyp that is going to be surgically removed, as well as two more polyps each greater than or equal to 7 to 10 mm in size which are anticipated to be removed during the same surgery.
- Patients with insulin-dependent diabetes may not participate.
- Patients must be between the ages of 15 and 100.
