Microvascular Reconstruction for Advanced-Stage Head and Neck Cancer Patients: A Prospective Analysis of Quality of Life and Symptom Relief

[Protocol 07-150]

Full Title :
MICROVASCULAR RECONSTRUCTION FOR ADVANCED-STAGE HEAD AND NECK CANCER PATIENTS: A PROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS OF QUALITY OF LIFE AND SYMPTOM RELIEF
Purpose :

The goal of this study is to better understand the changes in symptoms and overall quality of life of patients after they have had head and neck surgery and reconstruction. Learning about changes in patients' quality of life will help doctors and future patients make more informed treatment decisions.

Participants in this study have a stage III or IV mouth (oral cavity) cancer that requires surgery to remove the cancer and reconstructive surgery to repair the defect. They will complete four questionnaires: one before the surgery and three others at three, six, and twelve months following the surgery. These questionnaires include short questions asking patients how they feel about their cancer, its treatment, their health, their mood, and their appearance after the surgery.

Eligibility :

To be eligible for this study, patients must meet several criteria, including but not limited to the following:

  • Patients must have a stage III or IV cancer of the oral cavity that requires surgery to remove the cancer and reconstructive surgery to repair the defect.
  • Patients must be able to understand and speak English so they can complete the questionnaires.
  • Patients must be age 21 or older.

For more information and to inquire about eligibility for this study, please contact Dr. Andrea Pusic at 212-639-5085.
