A Phase I/II Trial of PTC299 in Patients with HIV-Related Kaposi's Sarcoma

[Protocol 08-064]

Full Title :
A PHASE 1/2 TRIAL OF PTC299 IN PATIENTS WITH HIV-RELATED KAPOSI'S SARCOMA (AMC 059)
Purpose :

Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is the most common cancer in people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The purpose of this study is to find the highest dose of a new drug called PTC299 that can be given safely to patients with KS and to evaluate the effect of the drug on blood proteins and tumor size.

Tumors make high levels of a substance called vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a protein which stimulates the formation of blood vessels that feed tumors and help them grow. Blocking VEGF may slow blood vessel formation and tumor growth. PTC299 may block tumors from making VEGF.

Eligibility :

To be eligible for this study, patients must meet several criteria, including but not limited to the following:

  • Patients must have a confirmed diagnosis of Kaposi's sarcoma and be positive for HIV.
  • At least 4 weeks must have passed since completion of any prior anticancer therapy and entry into the study, and patients must have recovered from any side effects.
  • Patients must be age 18 or older.

For more information and to inquire about eligibility for this study, please contact Andrea Martelli, RN, at 212-639-7426.
