A Phase II Study of Temozolomide for Relapsed Sensitive or Refractory Small Cell Lung Cancer

[Protocol 08-065]

Full Title :
PHASE II STUDY OF TEMOZOLOMIDE FOR RELAPSED SENSITIVE OR REFRACTORY SMALL CELL LUNG CANCER
Purpose :

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of temozolomide for the treatment of small cell lung cancers that have continued to grow despite prior chemotherapy. Temozolomide is an oral chemotherapy drug that is currently used to treat brain cancer and melanoma.

As part of this study, researchers will be conducting additional tests to help understand how temozolomide works. First, if there is a tumor sample from a biopsy done in the past, it will be analyzed for an abnormal gene that may be present in a patient's lung cancer. At certain times during this study, a blood test will be done to analyze the amount of a certain protein in the blood which may affect how temozolomide works.

Eligibility :

To be eligible for this study, patients must meet several criteria, including but not limited to the following:

  • Patients must have small cell lung cancer that has progressed despite one or two prior regimens of chemotherapy.
  • Patients with brain metastases may also be eligible to participate.
  • At least 3 weeks must have passed since completion of prior chemotherapy or radiation therapy and entry into the study, and patients must have recovered from any side effects.

For more information and to inquire about eligibility for this study, please contact Dr. Maria Catherine Pietanza at 212-639-6373.
