A Study of Pazopanib versus Sunitinib for the Treatment of Patients with Locally Advanced and/or Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma

[Protocol 08-089]

Full Title :
STUDY VEG108844, A STUDY OF PAZOPANIB VERSUS SUNITINIB IN THE TREATMENT OF SUBJECTS WITH LOCALLY ADVANCED AND/OR METASTATIC RENAL CELL CARCINOMA
Purpose :

The purpose of this study is to compare the effectiveness of pazopanib, an investigational drug, with sunitinib, a drug approved for treating kidney cancer, in patients with locally advanced or metastatic renal cell carcinoma that has not yet been treated with systemic therapy.

Tumors need blood vessels to grow. Pazopanib is thought to work by preventing new blood vessels from growing. Sunitinib also works by inhibiting the growth of blood vessels that tumors need to receive nutrition and to spread to other parts of the body. The drug may also slow the growth and division of cancer cells.

Patients will be randomly assigned to receive pazopanib or sunitinib. Both drugs are pills that are taken orally.

Eligibility :

To be eligible for this study, patients must meet several criteria, including but not limited to the following:

  • Patients must have a confirmed diagnosis of locally advanced or metastatic clear cell renal cell carcinoma that has not yet been treated with systemic therapy.
  • At least 4 weeks must have passed since any major surgery and entry into the study.
  • Patients must be age 18 or older.

For more information and to inquire about eligibility for this study, please contact Dr. Robert Motzer at 646-422-4312.
