A Phase II Study of Gemcitabine, Cisplatin, and Sunitinib as Chemotherapy Before Surgery in Patients with Muscle-Invasive Bladder Cancer
[Protocol 08-159]
- Full Title :
- PHASE II STUDY OF GEMCITABINE, CISPLATIN, AND SUNITINIB (GC-S) AS NEOADJUVANT CHEMOTHERAPY IN PATIENTS WITH MUSCLE-INVASIVE BLADDER CANCER
- Purpose :
Neoadjuvant chemotherapy involves the administration of anticancer drugs to a patient before surgery as a means of shrinking the tumor. Previous studies of patients with bladder cancer that has grown into the surrounding muscle have shown that those who receive chemotherapy before surgical removal of the bladder live longer than patients who only undergo surgery.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of giving three chemotherapy drugs (gemcitabine, cisplatin, and sunitinib) to patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer before surgery to see if this combination treatment can shrink the tumor. Gemcitabine and cisplatin are standard drugs used in the treatment of bladder cancer. Sunitinib is approved for treating kidney cancer and a rare form of sarcoma called GIST, and studies have suggested it has promising activity in patients with advanced bladder cancer that has spread to other areas of the body.
- Eligibility :
To be eligible for this study, patients must meet several criteria, including but not limited to the following:
- Patients must have a confirmed diagnosis of muscle-invasive bladder cancer that has not yet been surgically removed.
- Patients may not have had prior chemotherapy or radiation therapy to the bladder.
- Patients must be age 18 or older.
